Halloween Pet Safety

Candy, costumes and frights are all things we’re accustomed to for Halloween; however, they can be scary and dangerous for pets. The constant noise, unexpected screams, dangling decorations and everything else that goes bump-in-the-night can scare even the most well-adjusted pet. Here are some tips to ensure that this Halloween is filled with plenty of treats and no tricks this year:

  • Walk your dog before the trick-or-treaters start their visits.
  • Keep your pet safe in the back room during peak trick-or-treating hours, or during parties, as the costumed visitors and loud noises can frighten them.
  • Make sure your pet is microchipped and has visible, up-to-date ID tags on his or her collar.
  • Keep candy out of your pet’s reach. Candy with some an artificial sweeteners can be harmful to pets. All forms of chocolate can be toxic to cats and dogs. If your pet does ingest candy, contact your veterinarian immediately.
  • Keep candlelit jack-o-lanterns out of reach of your curious pet. Use flameless candles instead. Always secure electrical cords out of reach, too.
  • Keep trick-or-treating a people only activity. Dogs may become difficult to handle during the noise of the festivities.
  • If your pet wears a costume, remove dangling pieces that may be a hazard to them. If your pet does not like its costume, then do not force it on him or her.

Black cats may be targeted by persons lured by Halloween myths; however, all animals are vulnerable to malicious pranks. If you see anything suspicious or dangerous regarding animals, please call the Pasadena Humane Society at 626.792.7151 (Glendale residents can call toll-free 818.240.9100), your local police or animal control department.

Have a safe and happy Halloween!
