JPL, Mars Rover to be Featured in State of the City Event

A full-scale replica of the Mars Curiosity Rover will be on display for attendees of the Thursday, Jan. 24 event.

Jet Propulsion Laboratory's work with the Mars Curiosity Rover will be one of the highlights of the annual State of the City event, which is set to take place on Thursday, Jan. 24 on the campus of Caltech.

"On one level, (the attention) is intoxicating," said Stephen Kulczycki, deputy director of communications and education at JPL. "On another level, it's humbling because it means we have this great responsibility to come up with new ideas and new missions."

A full-scale replica of Curiosity is expected to be on display for pictures, while officials from JPL will be on hand to answer questions about the rover and its workings, according to a release from the city. Kulczycki called the Mars Rover a "symbol of extraordinary human accomplishment," as well as something that hopefully would inspire others to carry similar dreams.

The State of the City event itself, entitled "Celebrating Success," will feature Mayor Bill Bogaard and JPL Deputy Director Eugene L. Tattini talking about JPL's work on Mars with the help of the rover. Bogaard will also share some of Pasadena's other accomplishments.

The State of the City event will take place at Caltech's Beckman Auditorium. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the formal program will begin at 7 p.m. For anyone who wants to check out the Mars rover model (if the weather allows it), you can come by at 6 p.m.
