Top 5 SGV-Area Stories: Death at High School, Canceled Gunfight, Explosion, Walmart, Bears

Here's a roundup of stories you may have missed during the week.

If you missed a few days of Patch coverage this week, here's another recap of five stories that led SGV-area Patch sites:

  • A young man jumped or fell to his death at La Cañada High School on Friday. Read about the candlelight vigil, and see photos, here.
  • A "flash" explosion at the Sport Chalet on Foothill Boulevard in La Canada Flintridge injured two of the store's employees. According to County Fire Department personnel on the scene, a contractor smelled gas in one of the store's utility rooms, then alerted employees, who then went to check it out.
  • The Walmart Neighborhood Market finally opened in Altadena on Friday, and it remains one of the most-discussed issues in the community. Some people were happy with the arrival of the market, while others remain opposed. Join in the discussion here.
  • , one of the events planned Saturday to commemorate the city's incorporation in 1888. "I deferred to the opinion of the community that a gunfight with the present climate of violence in schools is unwise,'' said Glen Duncan, SPPF's vice president.
  • Patch reader Kelly Campbell sent video of a pair of bears crossing the street in the 500 block of North Alta Vista in Monrovia. One of the bears sniffed around a garbage can in front of a home for a bit before following its furry friend, who eventually disappeared from sight.
