Pasadena Police to Explore Gun Buyback Program

The city will re-emphasize its voluntary gun surrender program and explore a gun buyback program following two recent fatal shootings.

The Pasadena Police Department is exploring the possibility of creating a gun buyback program to get firearms off the streets after two fatal shootings happened in the last two months.

Stressing that the program should be considered just one tool in a varied approach to curbing violence in the city, Pasadena Police Chief Phillip Sanchez told the city's Public Safety Committee Monday that such a program could be effective in enhancing other anti-violence measures, according to the Pasadena Star-News.

"I think gun buyback programs enhance other programs, and so if we're going to look at gun buyback programs, it needs to be in conjunction with responsible gun ownership, community education, violence prevention alternatives as well," Sanchez said, according to the paper.
