This past Sunday (Jan. 20, 2013) a local monthly meetup group, LA Doxies, met up at the Alice Frost Kennedy Off-leash dog park. The parks has been in regular rotation for the meetup group these last 5 years and the park is perfect for it (normally speaking).
However, it seems like the patrons have become very relaxed in the rules. On three separate occasions in a 2-hour period (between 1-3 pm) people were bringing big dogs into the small dog park section. Upon the second infraction the group called for backup from the Pasadena Police. A Park Safety Specialist arrived on the scene but was completely ineffective in enforcing the rules of the park. He said he was not empowered to ask anyone to leave, and the rules were more like guidelines. Really, guidelines?!
My question to Pasadena Dog Community is, does Alice Frost Kennedy have two dog sections – one for big and one for small dogs, and are those rules enforceable by anyone?!
In those short two hours memebers of the meetup group witnessed two large pitbulls, one collie and two big poodle-like mixes come to the small dog section. The pitbulls left at the meetup group's polite request, but the other patrons refused and said, “If your dogs don’t like big dogs that’s your problem.” Is that common behavior at dog parks?! It certainly hasn't been my experience in the greater LA area.
Sunday was particularly disappointing because it was something many folks looked forward to all month, and when the Park Safety Specialist proved to be useless many members of the meetup group elected to end their gathering abruptly instead of running the risk of injury to their little pups. Dachshunds with their long backs are prone to injury from clumsy and playful big dogs, if not careful.
LA Doxies is not an anti-big dog group, but their purpose is to provide regular socialization opportunities for their dachshunds in a safe environment. Alice Frost Kennedy Dog Park was not safe last Sunday for their pups.
What has been your experience as of late at this park? Should the City of Pasadena consider imposing a weight or height limit to the small dog park section to better help patrons understand the rules. In my experience the word “small” can be rather subjective whereas a specific height or weight limit is more objective.
If you believe in returning Alice Frost Kennedy Off-leash Dog Park to a safe, public area for both small and large dogs, consider contacting Carl Jones at email@example.com or call him directly at 626-744-4321.
Why have rules or separate areas, if patrons refuse to follow them?!
