What does the Night mean to you?
Two special screenings of “Night” will be presented to audience members on Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at Laemmle’s Playhouse 7 in Pasadena and Thursday, Febraury 7 at Laemmle’s NoHo7 in North Hollywood.
Writer-director Lawrence Johnston (Eternity, Life) loves the night and celebrates it. Some regard the night as the domain of fear and the unknown, but Johnston rejects these notions. Filming mainly in the beautiful cityscapes of Melbourne and Sydney, but also in locations throughout the breadth and depth of Australia, this movie explores the phenomenon that is Night, principally from a very positive perspective. In addition to its compilation of stunning visuals of city views and country vistas, people from all walks of life are interviewed to contribute their experiences of the nocturnal.
What is night? For some, it means a respite from the stresses and worries of the workday world, a signal to seek the comfort of home, hearth and loved ones. For others, it’s the time when everything begins: the time to dress up, step out, seek out the companionship of friends, or encounter someone new to engage in whatever intimate or exciting adventures the night may hold, enveloping people securely in its warm blanket of darkness. It’s a time of mystery, magic, romance and joy.
Complementing the gorgeous images captured by cinematographer Laurie McInnes is the original musical score by celebrated composer Cezary Skubiszewski, performed by the 78-piece National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra and by The Ashton Smith Singers of Australia.
“Night” is presented as a mystical, sensual wonderland where our greatest experiences await in store.
Writer-director Lawrence Johnston is a graduate of Swinburne Film and Television School in Melbourne and the director of award-winning films including the narrative features “Life” and “Night Out” and the documentary “Eternity.” “Night” has been a selection at film festivals in Toronto, Amsterdam, Melbourne, Brisbane and Shanghai. It won the Critics Prize at Toronto International Film Festival, and the Screen Music Award.
“Night,” with its lovely, romantic images and lushly orchestrated score, is a perfect date-night movie for couples. The solitary filmgoer can immerse him- or herself in a world of beautiful pictures and music. The adventurous filmgoer will be rewarded with an unusual experience, as he or she enters the “Night.”
Film Festival Flix presents a selected feature from the finest in international cinema each month with the intent of giving the average filmgoer an experience as close as possible to that of a V.I.P. attending an international film festival in a foreign capital. At each of the two local screenings, there will be a Red Carpet beginning approximately one half-hour before the 7:30 p.m. screening, followed by a live Q & A with writer-director Lawrence Johnston. The Pasadena screening will be preceded by a reception at nearby Monopole Wine Bar, with appetizers available. There will be a post-screening reception in North Hollywood at the nearby Big Wangs Restaurant.
At each venue, a $14.00 ticket affords entrée to the entire evening’s Festival experience.
