South Lake, Pasadena: Loft living, nightlife, shopping

South Lake, Pasadena is a great area for those seeking urban living. It offers high-end lofts, great dining and shopping and a vibrant nightlife.

I love that Pasadena has so much to offer its residents and tourists. Whether enjoy amazing historical architecture such as the craftsman homes or you prefer high-end lofts and urban living, Pasadena can meet your needs. From fantastic events like the Tournament of Roses to fantastic dining and shopping districts, it’s difficult to imagine wanting for anything in this vibrant town.

But it is a lot to explore, and chances are you have not made it to every corner of the city. That’s why today, I want to highlight South Lake Avenue. This 12-block district is a great blend of high-end lofts, shopping and dining and local business. It has a long history, and has maintained its importance as a business district in Pasadena over 50 years.

The South Lake district is bordered by Colorado Boulevard to the north, the Pasadena-San Marino border to the south, Hudson Avenue to the west and Hill Avenue to the east.

In 1947, South Lake Avenue was bordered by houses on both sides of the street. But in September of that year, it got its first big push toward the retail district it is today, with the opening of Bullock’s Department Store (which became Macy’s).

Currently, there are three eateries/bars in South Lake participating in dineLA, a 12-week event that features the best dining in Los Angeles. And South Lake also includes Trattoria Napolis. The cocktail director there was nominated for Best Bartender in America.
