Rose Court Father Goes Gangnam Style

Traditionally an affair that leans more toward stoic than knee slapping, Thursday's Rose Queen Coronation ceremony produced as much hearty laughter as thunderous applause.

They strutted down the runway, high-fived each other, danced and sang.

And they were the dads.

For a few minutes Thursday, the fathers of the 2013 Royal Court borrowed the spotlight from their daughters, especially Flintridge Sacred Heart dad Richard McGregor. Father to princess Victoria McGregor, Richard launched into a Gangnam style groove to the delight of the crowd and the surprise of emcee Colleen Williams of KNBC. (See video attached to this story).

The elder McGregor admitted "I'm not that good,'' but it didn't stop him from busting a move in front of the masses and leaving a comedic mark on this year's Pasadena Tournament of Roses Coronation at the Pasadena Convention Center. Tournament President Sally Bixby crowned Vanessa Manjarrez of Pasadena the 2013 Rose Queen.

McGregor and her fellow princesses, Madison Teodo, 17, La Canada High School, Sonia Shenoi, 17, San Marino High School, Kate Benuska, 17, Maranatha High School, Nicole Nelam, 17, Pasadena High School and Tracy Cresta, 17, La Salle High School, strode into the convention center wearing tiaras atop their heads and arms linked with their dads.

"I had no idea what we were in store for, but I can't wait for the places we'll go,'' Shenoi said, in a nod to the 2013 Rose Parade's theme.

With a jam-packed engagement calendar -- the royal court attends some 150 events by Jan. 1 -- the girls have to be very organized, especially with college applications, Williams noted.

"I'm going to send in my [Vanderbilt early acceptance] application as soon as I get home,'' assured Benuska of Altadena.

One event Benuska is really looking forward to is visiting children at Huntington Memorial Hospital, she said, noting the court will dress up for Halloween. The last time she donned a costume was freshman year, when she went as one of the Teletubbies.

And this year?

"A Disney princess,'' she said.
